Couples therapy and relationship counselling

Gottman Method couples therapy and relationship counselling via telehealth across Australia and face-to-face in Swan Hill.

Gottman Method couples and relationship counselling

The Gottman Method is not talk therapy dressed up in couple-friendly language. It is one of the most extensively researched approaches to relationships in the world, developed from four decades of studying what actually distinguishes thriving couples from those who don't make it.

If your relationship matters to you, and you are ready to do more than just survive it, this is where that work begins.

What we do:

Evidence-Based Couples Therapy, Not Just Talk

At Well Matters we offer Gottman Method couples therapy and relationship counselling, one of the most extensively researched approaches to relationships in the world, developed from four decades of studying what actually makes relationships last.

This is not generic talk therapy with a couples label on it. The Gottman Method gives us a precise, evidence-based framework for understanding what's getting in the way of your relationship and practical, research-backed tools for changing it.

Whether you're navigating communication breakdown, recovering from betrayal, trying to reconnect after years of growing apart, or simply want to build a stronger foundation before problems take hold, this is where that work begins.

How it works

Step 1 — Your initial assessment

We begin with a structured Gottman-informed assessment: a combination of a joint session and two individual sessions, and a thorough relationship questionnaire that gives us a detailed picture of your relationship's strengths and the areas that need attention. This is the foundation everything else builds upon.

Step 2 — Your tailored therapy plan

Based on the assessment, in session four, we provide thorough feedback about your relationship. We identify the areas you are thriving in and the places where improvements can be made. This helps us to develop a therapy plan specific to your relationship. Sessions are structured around your goals, your patterns, and what the Gottman research tells us will make the most difference.

Step 3 — Ongoing sessions

This is where the real work begins. Each session will be tailored to your specific relationship needs. This includes learning new skills, including practising how to regulate, communicate and problem solve through active exercises. It’s also where you begin to reconnect and build a deeper sense of connection.

Telehealth or face-to-face

All sessions are available via secure telehealth video call, which means no matter where in Australia you are, access isn't a barrier. Face-to-face sessions are available at our Swan Hill rooms.
